After running fine for over a year, I rebooted the server and this started.

Reading configuration data...
   Read main config file okay...
Warning: Could not get passwd entry for 'SvcNagwin'
Warning: Possibly root user failed dropping privileges with initgroups()
   Failed to drop privileges.  Aborting.

***> One or more problems was encountered while processing the config files...

Check your configuration file(s) to ensure that they contain valid
directives and data defintions.  If you are upgrading from a previous
version of Nagios, you should be aware that some variables/definitions
may have been removed or modified in this version.  Make sure to read
the HTML documentation regarding the config files, as well as the
'Whats New' section to find out what has changed.

I've uninstalled nagwin, deleted the SvcNagwin account and the install directory and then re-installed.  Still get the same error.  I've even tried upgrading, still no dice.  Anyone know what the deal is with this?

thanks,

Jeff

Open a bash prompt

Open a bash prompt (<inst.dir>\bin\bash -i) and run the following command:

mkgroup > /etc/group

Ok, now the check is ok

Ok, now the check is ok however I cannot start the Nagwin_nginx service.  what exactly doe the mkgroup command fix and what causes this?

it starts and immediately stops with this msg:

"The Nagwin_Nginx service on the local Computer started and then stopped.  Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs"

The nagios web interface is obviously not running now.

any ideas on this?

btw, Windows 2011 small business server standard 64bit

Many Thanks,

Jeff

mkgroup command creates group

mkgroup command creates group entries used for checking group memberships Cygwin-way (a Posix system). Actually, the installer takes care of it. However, it may happen some changes, resulting invalid entries in that particular file. If the service denies to start properly even if you've created the group file, you need to check nagwin_nagios log files located at var/log directory.

If we're talking Winx32

If we're talking Winx32 system here, I resolved this non-starting service by:

1) ensuring SvcNagwin user is in Administrators group

2) filesystem permissions were set to FC for this user on nginx folder

I was able to start the service on a win2K8 R2 box
